Interviews and performances on radio programs, recordings of live performances, dubbings from issued and unissued commercial recordings, and a series of home-equipment recordings of Ray Whitley (1901-1979), Anglo-American country music star, singer, guitarist, composer, and movie actor known mainly for his involvement in Western films and network radio. After World War I, Whitley used western movies to popularize country- western music, helping to launch country music's postwar boom. He also played a paramount role in the career of country music composer Fred Rose. Accompanying or playing with Ray on these recordings are a number of other artists, including Fred Rose, The Frank and Luther Trio, Kay Whitley, Judy Kay Whitley, The Rhythm Wranglers, and others.
